Seiko 5

Founded in Tokyo in 1881, Seiko has more than 140 years of watchmaking experience and has played an important role in the development of modern timekeeping. Its innovations include the world's first quartz wristwatch, the first watch with computer functionality and the first watch powered entirely by body heat. This technical expertise is also reflected in Seiko's collections for men and women, which combine sporty design with reliable watchmaking technology. Many models feature automatic movements and robust stainless steel cases, offering a strong balance of craftsmanship, performance and value.

Seiko 5: A Classic Reimagined

The Seiko 5 became an icon in the 1970s. Its round stainless steel case, sporty design and distinctive recessed crown at 4 o'clock gave the watch an instantly recognisable appearance. Designed for an active lifestyle, the Seiko 5 has always combined automatic watchmaking with a practical, sports-oriented approach.

In September 2019, Seiko relaunched the Seiko 5 with a contemporary design and a significantly expanded collection while retaining the defining characteristics of its predecessor. The result is a versatile range of sports watches combining reliable timekeeping with carefully executed finishing.

Key Features of the Seiko 5

Every Seiko 5 is defined by five fundamental features:

  • Automatic movement
  • Day and date display
  • Water resistance
  • Recessed crown at 4 o'clock
  • A case and bracelet designed for durability

The watches are powered by Seiko's in-house automatic calibre 4R36. Previously used in higher-end models from the Prospex diving collection, including the Seiko Turtle, the calibre also provides the Seiko 5 with a stop-seconds function. This allows the seconds hand to be stopped when setting the watch for more precise time synchronisation.

Hardlex mineral crystal protects the dial against scratches and impact, while select references feature a titanium carbide coating for additional protection. Seiko's proprietary LumiBrite luminescent treatment on the indices and hands improves legibility in low-light conditions. An exhibition case back provides a view of the movement, while three-dimensional applied indices add depth to the dial. Depending on the model, the Seiko 5 is available with silicone, leather or stainless steel straps and bracelets.

Seiko 5 Styles and Models

The Seiko 5 collection includes 27 distinct men's references as well as a dedicated ladies' model. Its different style directions range from understated and elegant to bold and sporty:

  • Sense: Sense models feature striking nylon NATO straps in green or brown, combined with finely textured dials and bold applied indices.
  • Street: The Street collection has a darker aesthetic, with red, blue, or understated grey dial and hand details paired with a matte-brushed black stainless steel case. A nylon strap provides a secure and comfortable fit.
  • Suits: Suits models combine Milanese mesh bracelets with case finishing that gives the watches a distinctive vintage character and a more refined appearance.
  • Sports: Sports models offer a 41-hour power reserve and water resistance to 10 bar. Select references also feature a tachymeter bezel, adding both functionality and a more technical, sports-oriented appearance.
  • Specialist: Specialist models combine a clean, functional design with a sporty character. Their automatic calibre provides up to 41 hours of power reserve at six beats per second. Features include a stop-seconds function, a day and date display at 3 o'clock and a unidirectional rotating bezel with minute markers.
  • Ladies: Available in silver or gold tones, the Ladies' automatic model features a bracelet combining brushed and polished stainless steel for an elegant yet durable everyday design.
  • Street Fighter: Inspired by the Street Fighter V video game, these men's watches are Limited Edition collector's models, with each reference limited to 9,999 pieces worldwide. Individual designs are based on characters from the game and combine distinctive colour schemes with the technical specifications of the Seiko 5 collection.
