Mido Commander

The Mido Commander has been a cornerstone of the manufacturer's collections since 1959, distinguished by its clean aesthetics and exceptional robustness — qualities that have even earned it credentials as a capable dive watch. Available in both ladies' and gentlemen's editions, the Commander transitions effortlessly from everyday wear to an elegant accent alongside evening attire. Throughout the decades, the Swiss manufacture has seen little reason to alter a design that has stood the test of time.

Inspired by the Eiffel Tower

Swiss manufacturer Mido has long stood for automatic watches of exceptional durability and longevity. The brand has always embraced technical innovation, yet never at the expense of the classic design sensibility that gives each timepiece its distinctive character. The Commander collection is a compelling testament to this harmony between heritage and modernity.

Mido itself cites the Eiffel Tower as the defining inspiration behind the collection. The clean, architectural lines of the case pay homage to the iconic Parisian landmark's structural elegance. The first Mido Commander was introduced in 1959 and has remained a cornerstone of the brand's catalogue ever since. Over the decades, the collection has grown considerably, and today it encompasses a diverse range of models to suit every sensibility.

Commander Icone – Faithful Reinterpretations of 1970

The Icone models draw directly from the original references unveiled by Mido in 1970. Each watch features a monocoque case and houses a classic self-winding movement. The dial is protected by a sapphire crystal bearing Mido's iconic logo. The dial itself is a standout detail – a satin-finished surface with a sophisticated two-tone gradient. All Icone models offer water resistance to 50 metres.

The Commander 1959 – A Tribute to the Original

The contemporary Commander 1959 remains true to the spirit of the founding reference. Its movement carries COSC chronometer certification, ensuring exceptional timekeeping precision. Each watch is fitted with a Milanese mesh bracelet, whose fine weave lies close to the skin for a secure, comfortable fit – while the open mesh construction allows for airflow, preventing the discomfort of perspiration beneath the bracelet. For those who prefer a more traditional aesthetic, models with a classic link bracelet are also available. A date aperture completes the dial.

The Commander 1959 is offered in a refined palette, including silver-toned and gold-plated variants.

The Commander Chronograph – A True All-Rounder

Among the most technically accomplished references in the collection, the Commander Chronograph presents itself with a 42.5 mm case diameter – the largest timepiece Mido offers within the Commander line. Its feature set is equally impressive: water resistance to 50 metres, an integrated tachymeter scale, a stopwatch complication, and a power reserve of 60 hours.

The watch displays both the date and day of the week. Its sunburst blue dial is fitted with applied indices, while the case is rendered in classic brushed stainless steel and shielded by scratch-resistant sapphire crystal.

The Commander Gradient – A Vision of the Future

The Commander Gradient offers a rare and captivating window into the craft concealed within every timepiece. Its transparent acrylic crystal dial puts the movement's inner workings on full display, as does the exhibition caseback. The dial features a striking smoked effect: perfectly transparent at the centre, it gradually deepens towards the periphery, creating a natural contrast that keeps the dial legible at a glance. The date is presented through a crisp white aperture.

The Gradient is available in a variety of configurations. Alongside stainless steel bracelet options, the collection also includes models fitted with leather straps or robust textile straps, offering versatility to match any occasion.

The Mido Commander Big Date

One of the most versatile references within the collection, the Commander Big Date is offered across an extensive range of variants – in silver, brown, and black, with stainless steel bracelets or leather straps. The model was developed to mark the brand's centenary, and its name derives from the generously proportioned big date aperture set into the dial.

Beyond this signature feature, the dial maintains a deliberately restrained, purist aesthetic. Particularly noteworthy is the movement's power reserve: the calibre 80 automatic movement – developed in-house by Mido – delivers a remarkable 80-hour power reserve, a genuinely impressive specification for a self-winding watch.

Mido Commander – Timeless Elegance, Unwavering Style

Available in both ladies' and gentlemen's models, the Mido Commander collection caters to a wide spectrum of tastes and lifestyles. Purists and collectors are naturally drawn to the classic 1959, while those with an active lifestyle who want a reliable companion for sport and everyday wear will find the Chronograph an ideal choice. Across the collection, both men and women have a range of case sizes to choose from, with a chronometer-certified variant providing a refined finishing note to the Commander line.

Despite being a collection with more than six decades of history, Mido consistently integrates contemporary technical advances without compromising the timeless design language that makes each Commander as relevant and versatile today as ever.
